PE Paper / Lined Board is a paper or board material with a thin layer of polyethylene, often called PE, applied to one or both sides.
The paper or board gives the material its shape, stiffness and print surface, while the PE lining adds resistance to water, grease and moisture.
This makes it a practical choice for packaging products that are wet, oily, chilled, frozen or likely to create condensation.
It is often used where standard paperboard would absorb liquid, weaken, stain or lose its shape during handling.
PE lined board can be supplied in a range of weights and thicknesses, from lighter papers through to heavier boards.
Current stock availability can vary, with options commonly ranging from 70gsm up to 2100 microns.
The main benefit of PE Paper / Lined Board is its barrier performance.
The PE layer helps protect the board from moisture and grease, making it suitable for packaging food and non-food products that need a more resistant surface.
Depending on the grade, it can also support heat sealing, which is useful for certain food packs, liners and sealed packaging formats.
Print performance depends on the side being printed.
The paper or board side is usually easier to print, while the PE side may need surface treatment to help inks, adhesives or coatings bond properly.
For best results, the board should be matched to the intended print method, pack design and end-use conditions.
The strength of the material mainly comes from the base board rather than the PE coating.
A heavier board will usually give more rigidity, while the PE lining helps the surface resist damp, grease and staining.
PE Paper / Lined Board is commonly used for packaging wet, greasy or moisture-sensitive products.
Typical applications include takeaway food packaging, frozen food cartons, bakery packaging, chilled food sleeves, tray liners, portion packs and industrial interleaving.
It can also be used wherever a waterproof or grease-resistant barrier is needed between the product and the outer environment.
The main limitation is recyclability.
Because PE lined board combines paper fibre with a plastic coating, it can be harder to recycle than plain paper or uncoated board.
Some recycling facilities can process PE coated board, but acceptance depends on the coating, contamination level and local recycling system.
Alternatives may be better in some cases.
Foil lined board may be better where stronger protection from moisture, oxygen, aroma or light is needed.
Uncoated kraft or cartonboard may be the better option where the product is dry and does not need a barrier layer.
