Folding Boxboard, often shortened to FBB, is a lightweight cartonboard made for folding cartons and printed packaging.
It usually has a coated white print surface, with inner layers that give the board bulk, stiffness and good creasing performance.
Many FBB grades use a multi-layer construction, with mechanical pulp in the middle and chemical pulp on the outer layers.
This gives the board a good stiffness-to-weight ratio, which is why it is widely used for cartons that need to feel strong without becoming too heavy.
Our Folding Boxboard is available from 420 microns / 250gsm, with GC2 manila back grades available from stock.
GC1 white back grades are available on request.
The main benefit of Folding Boxboard is that it combines good print quality, carton strength and reliable folding performance.
The coated white face gives a smooth surface for high quality print, making it well suited to retail packaging where branding and shelf presentation matter.
GC2 grades have a coated white front and a manila or cream reverse, while GC1 grades have a whiter reverse for applications where both sides of the carton may be seen.
FBB is designed to be cut, creased, folded and glued into cartons.
Good creasing matters because it helps the carton fold cleanly without cracking, warping or losing shape.
It is commonly used on automated packing lines, but the exact grade should always be matched to the carton size, product weight, print method and finishing process.
Folding Boxboard is used mainly for high quality print and carton applications, including food packaging, chilled cartons, confectionery boxes, cosmetics, healthcare packaging, pharmaceutical cartons, retail sleeves and lightweight product cartons.
Some grades are suitable for direct food contact and chiller work, but this should always be confirmed against the exact grade, product type, storage conditions and any inks, coatings or adhesives used in the finished pack.
FBB offers good rigidity for its weight, but it is not automatically a moisture or grease barrier unless a specific coating, sizing treatment or laminate has been added.
For chilled, frozen or damp applications, the board should be specified carefully so it can handle the expected temperature, humidity and handling conditions.
